Bangkok River, Temples, and Night Markets

Bangkok skyline at night

From Suvarnabhumi Airport, ride the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai (45 THB) and transfer to the BTS Skytrain. Purchase a Rabbit card for cashless taps or load day passes if you plan multiple rides.

Temples

Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat (orange flag) to Tha Chang for the Grand Palace—dress code requires covered shoulders and knees; avoid rental scarf scams outside. Afterward, walk to Wat Pho for reclining Buddha photos and Wat Arun across the ferry (4 THB) for sunset.

Markets + Food

  • Or Tor Kor Market for polished produce and ready-to-eat curries.
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market for apparel; go early and carry cash.
  • Jodd Fairs (new Rod Fai) for trendy night stalls and cocktail trucks.

Try street food where turnover is high; watch dishes being cooked and opt for vendors with bottled water for washing utensils. If nervous, start with food courts at Terminal 21 or ICONSIAM—they use stored-value cards and keep cleanliness inspectors on-site.

Day Trip: Ayutthaya

Take the morning train from Hua Lamphong (90 minutes) or book a van through 12Go. Rent bicycles near the station or hire a tuk-tuk for temple circuits. Wear breathable clothing, apply sunscreen, and carry electrolyte packets.

Transport at Night

  • BTS/MRT closes around midnight; after that use Grab or metered taxis (insist on meter).
  • River ferries stop by 7 p.m.; night dinner cruises must be prebooked.
  • Avoid tuk-tuks quoting flat fares to tourist spots; negotiate or walk away.

Tap water isn't potable—use hotel dispensers or 7-Eleven refill machines. Carry mosquito repellent for riverside evenings.
